Winter HVAC Tips
Our area is experiencing colder than average temps which can strain everyone’s HVAC system. Here’s a few simple things to keep in mind:
Check and change your filter. Your system will be running overtime to try and keep up. If there is any doubt, replace it!
Your system is designed to maintain around 68-70 degrees when it’s about 25 degrees outside. When the outside temp drops way below that, don’t expect your heating system to maintain anything above 70-72 degrees.
If you have a heat pump, your emergency strips will be running. Go ahead and budget for a higher power bill. If you have gas/propane, plan for a higher gas bill.
For heat pumps, don’t be alarmed by steam or “smoke” from the outside unit. It’s normal, the unit is going through a defrost. For high efficiency furnaces - keep an eye on your condensate drain to be sure it’s not frozen.
Make sure your indoor vents are open and not blocked off by furniture or rugs. We need maximum output out of the duct systems.
A few “what if’s” to consider:
What if you lose power, do you have a plan to stay warm? (dress in layers, huddle in one room, extra blankets)
What if your propane tank ran empty? (check your tank level now)
What if you buy too much milk and bread? (french toast, PB&J’s, or donate if it’s still useable)
What if your heat stops working? (Give us a call and we are happy to help)
